Julia Gaudard / Gathering

Gathering brought together a group of Julia Gaudard’s painted characters as a social field. Faces and figures appear direct and highly graphic, but the exhibition is built less around isolated portraits than around the relationships created when the images are placed together. Colour, symmetry, expression and repetition turn the room into a loose community of personalities. Some figures feel open and welcoming, others guarded, awkward or exaggerated. Installed as a group, they create the feeling of entering a gathering already in progress. The exhibition reflects Gaudard’s interest in how simplified forms can carry attitude and emotion without needing a fixed story. It also captures one of Mauer Gallery’s recurring ambitions: exhibitions can be immediately enjoyable while remaining formally precise and distinctly authored.
