The third chapter ofCEL Ā VIE
CEL Ā VIE 3 opens on 25 September with a new selection of original Japanese animation art from the Mauer Gallery collection. Cels, douga, genga and production material return to the gallery with works that have not previously been shown in the series.
The exhibition brings the physical construction of animation into full view: paint, pencil, corrections, registration, timing and the extraordinary amount of handwork contained inside a single moving sequence.
The image before it moves
A finished frame is only one layer of the process. CEL Ā VIE 3 follows the image through painted celluloid, animation drawings, timing sheets, production notes and working documents.
Presented together, these materials reveal the decisions behind movement and character: line weight, pose, colour, correction and sequence. The marks of production remain visible and become part of the pleasure of looking.
Different eras, studios and visual languages
The exhibition moves across the breadth of Japanese animation, from recognisable characters and major series to unexpected frames that become powerful images on their own.
The collection spans television, feature films and OVAs, with material connected to titles such as Urusei Yatsura, Hokuto no Ken, Saint Seiya, Captain Harlock, Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump and many more. Each work is selected first for the strength of the image and the quality of the production material.
Art books, LaserDiscs, trading cards and Japanese memorabilia
CEL Ā VIE has grown into an annual meeting point for people who care about manga and Japanese animation. Alongside the production artwork, Mauer Gallery presents a changing selection of art books, LaserDiscs, vintage trading cards and Japanese memorabilia.
Some recent acquisitions are already available through Maison Saucisse. Other pieces will appear in the gallery for the first time during the exhibition. CEL Ā VIE 3 is a chance to see the collection in person, discover new material and spend time with other enthusiasts.
