Benoit Créac’h

Mixed media painting, collage, sculpture and installation

Benoit Créac’h / artist profile

Images from the inside

Benoit Créac’h works through mixed media painting, collage, sculpture and installation. His surfaces accumulate paint, printed fragments, abrasion, marks and damaged edges until they begin to resemble the visual density of the street: a Berlin post covered in stickers, layers, residue and images that have been added, torn away and covered again.

Inside that physical language, recurring figures appear with closed eyes and blocked noses. The figures withdraw from the outside world and hold everything inward. Their surrounding fields operate less like decoration than like interior space: visualisations of thought, memory and imagination unfolding behind the face.

Closed eyes / active imagination

What is happening behind the image?

The closed eye is central because it immediately shifts attention from observation to mental image. A viewer sees a figure that is no longer looking outward and begins to ask what that figure is seeing internally. The work uses that displacement to activate projection, memory and imagination.

Créac’h’s research repeatedly returns to the Kuleshov effect, active imagination, dream mechanisms and the way meaning appears between images rather than inside a single image. The paintings are therefore narrative without illustrating a fixed story. They create a mental situation and leave the viewer to complete it.

Myth, symbolism and research

Art as a record of inner research

Alchemy, Sufi ideas around light, the AT.9 test and research into the imaginary are recurring reference points. They are used as working tools for thinking about symbols, transformation, dreams and the structures through which people organise inner experience.

The work does not try to prescribe a lesson or tell viewers what is beautiful, correct or meaningful. It shares a field of research: discoveries, sensations and mental mechanisms around inspiration, imagination and the construction of personal mythology. Painting, collage, sculpture and installation become different ways of making that invisible activity physical.
