Ben & Julia / Milestone

Milestone belongs to the founding period of Mauer Gallery and established several ideas that still shape the programme. The exhibition brought together paintings and character based works by Ben & Julia without separating graphic image making from contemporary art practice. Large direct faces sat beside smaller works, creating a room driven by colour, repetition and visual humour. Looking back, Milestone functions as an early statement of what Mauer would become: a gallery comfortable moving between autonomous artwork, character culture, urban references and highly produced images. The exhibition was playful but not casual, accessible but not simplified.
