CEL Ā VIE 1
12.04.2024 to 24.05.2024 · Original Japanese animation art

CEL Ā VIE began with a simple shift of attention: look at animation not only as a finished film or television image, but through the physical artworks used to construct it. Original cels and production drawings were presented so that pencil, paint, line, corrections and technical notation could be seen at close range. Removed from continuous movement, each image becomes unexpectedly singular. Familiar characters can suddenly feel like paintings. Rough drawings can carry more energy than a finished frame. Production marks become part of the visual language. The first exhibition established animation art as a permanent strand of Mauer Gallery’s programme and introduced a way of showing it that is neither purely archival nor purely commercial.
